CV Weekly: Data Center Decisions & End-of-Summer Valley Happenings
✨ Last Week Around the Valley
August wrapped up with some significant local news across the Coachella Valley. Here's a look at what happened this past week:
Data Center Decisions Shake Up Two Cities
In a pair of landmark votes on August 26, both Coachella and Palm Springs took action on data center development. The Coachella City Council voted unanimously to permanently ban data centers within city limits, while the Palm Springs City Council approved a temporary moratorium on new data center projects. Both decisions reflect growing community concern about water usage, energy demands, and neighborhood impacts. Read more at The Desert Sun →
Red Lobster Announces Palm Desert Closure
The valley's only Red Lobster location, in Palm Desert, announced it will close in early September. Reports published August 25–26 cited the chain's ongoing financial struggles and corporate bankruptcy proceedings as the cause. Full story at The Desert Sun →
Palm Tree Trimming Underway in Palm Springs
The City of Palm Springs launched its annual palm tree trimming program on August 24, with work beginning in downtown and uptown areas. The project is expected to continue over the coming weeks. Residents near affected streets may notice crews and temporary lane closures.
Road Work Affecting Valley Commuters
Late-August road work continued to affect several key corridors. Repaving is underway on Monterey Avenue in Palm Desert, while work is also affecting Tahquitz Canyon Way, Racquet Club Road, and South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Plan extra travel time if you're heading through these areas.
Weather: Heat Easing as September Approaches
After a month of extreme heat — with temperatures frequently topping 110°F and monsoonal moisture bringing humidity and occasional mountain thunderstorms — an August 29 weather update from NBC Palm Springs indicated that temperatures are trending toward more seasonal levels heading into September. New School Set to Open in Palm Desert
Valley Independent Preparatory School was scheduled to open its doors on August 31 in Palm Desert, filling a gap left by Palm Valley School's closure in May 2026. Founded by parents and former faculty, the new school will serve pre-kindergarten through sixth grade on the St. Margaret's campus along Highway 74. Learn more at NBC Palm Springs →
Community Spotlight: Pet Star Photo Contest
The Greater Palm Springs Animal Allies Pet Star 2027 Photo Contest is still going strong, with the fundraiser having raised more than $19,000 toward a $25,000 goal. The contest runs through September 30 — a great way to show off your furry family member while supporting local animal welfare.
