CV Weekly: Shake Shack Comes to La Quinta & Back-to-School Spirit Fills the Valley

✨ Last Week Around the Valley

Summer heat hit record levels across the Coachella Valley last week, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect through the end of July. Temperatures climbed into the lower-to-upper 110s°F, peaking near 120°F in some communities on July 30–31. Residents were urged to stay cool, hydrate, and check on neighbors — a reminder of the Valley's fierce summer character.

Road Work & Infrastructure



    • Palm Desert: A months-long rehabilitation project for Monterey Avenue kicked off in early August. Drivers between Gerald Ford Drive and the I-10 bridge should expect delays.

    • La Quinta: Miles Avenue was temporarily closed between Adams Street and Washington Street for pavement work and utility elevation.

    • Palm Springs: Utility work on Tahquitz Canyon caused intermittent lane closures during the week of July 26. The city is also advancing a series of bridge projects to reduce future road closures caused by flooding and wind-blown sand.

    • Backpack Giveaway in Cathedral City: Assemblymember Greg Wallis partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City to distribute 300 fully stocked backpacks — plus free bicycle helmets and children's books — to local students ahead of the new school year on August 8. (NBC Palm Springs)

    • Modernism Week October 2026 (Oct 15–18): Organizers released the full schedule for the fall festival, featuring over 50 activities — architectural bus and walking tours, home tours, film screenings, the new Fall Dining Series, and "Wined-Up" at HALL Palm Springs.     • Pride on the Page Book Festival (Nov 14): The 5th Annual Pride on the Page Book Festival returns to the Palm Springs Cultural Center — and for the first time, the entire event including the evening reception is free to attend. (City of Palm Springs)

    • Desert Paws Sanctuary (Palm Desert)

      According to their website, Desert Paws Sanctuary is currently welcoming volunteers — including foster volunteers to provide temporary homes for rescued animals. The organization provides all necessary food and supplies for fosters. Visit desertpawssanctuary.org to apply.


    • FIND Food Bank (Indio — serves all of Coachella Valley)

      According to their website, FIND Food Bank is actively seeking volunteers for warehouse sorting (ages 17+), community food distribution (ages 18+), and homebound delivery driving (ages 18+).     • Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert (Palm Desert)

      According to their website, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert is actively recruiting mentors (ages 16–100) for one-to-one friendships with local youth.
