CV Weekly: Indio Sports Park Opens, Valley Debates Data Center & Memorial Day Weekend Ahead
✨ Last Week Around the Valley
It was a busy week across the Coachella Valley! Here's a look at some of the stories and happenings that shaped our community from May 11–18, 2026.
Community Voices & Local Governance
A packed town hall in Coachella drew more than 100 residents on May 11 to debate the city's proposed municipal utility and a new data center project. The two-hour session drew voices not just from Coachella, but from Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Rancho Mirage — a sign of how deeply regional this conversation has become. Read more at the Desert Sun.
In Palm Desert, the city is gearing up for its November 2026 general municipal election, with council seats in Districts 4 and 5 on the ballot. Several committee and commission positions are also opening up in June — a great opportunity for residents who want to get more involved in local government. Learn about Palm Desert committees.
The City of Indio continued to champion its "Open Rewards" Shop Local program, offering residents 5% cashback on purchases at participating local businesses. The city also hosted its weekly Food Truck Fridays and held a Planning Commission meeting on May 13. Visit the City of Indio.
Public Safety
A big rig fire on Interstate 10 east of the Coachella Valley shut down all lanes in both directions for several hours on Monday, May 11. The incident near Cottonwood Springs Road caused significant traffic disruptions across the region. Full story at the Desert Sun.
Community Support
The La Quinta community rallied around two local teachers — Diann Carroll of Desert Learning Academy and Mark Nicholas of La Quinta High School — after a fast-moving house fire on April 24 destroyed their home. Rescued by Riverside County sheriff's deputies, the couple has been overwhelmed by community generosity, including a student-organized GoFundMe. Read the story at KESQ.
