CV Weekly: Stagecoach Winds & Palm Springs Historic Designation

By Desert Biz Connect

✨ Last Week Around the Valley

Palm Springs

The week brought significant news to Palm Springs. On April 22, the historic First Church of Christ Scientist building — a celebrated example of Desert Modernism — received the city's highest historic designation, a milestone for preservation advocates. The City Council also revisited the mayoral selection process, considering a revised proposal to make the position a non-voting council member.

On the arts front, the Palm Springs Art Museum announced an upcoming exhibition, "A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit," and the Arts Commission approved a wildflower mural for a downtown parking structure. Meanwhile, the Big Gay BBQ brought festive energy to the Arenas District on April 25–26 as a lead-up to Palm Springs Pride.

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake centered north of Cabazon was felt across the area on the morning of April 26. Separately, police responded to an assault incident; the suspect was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Read more at KESQ.

Progress continues at Palm Springs International Airport, where plans for a new rental car center and international arrivals facility are advancing toward a potential completion by end of 2027.

Indio & Stagecoach 2026

The Stagecoach Country Music Festival dominated the regional conversation this past weekend (April 24–26) at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. In a dramatic turn, the festival was temporarily evacuated on the evening of April 25 due to dangerously high winds, causing the cancellation of sets by Journey and Riley Green. The event resumed later that night. Full story at ABC7.

Also in Indio, the City of Indio held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 27 to celebrate new improvements at the Badlands Trailhead, welcoming outdoor enthusiasts to upgraded trail access.

Rancho Mirage

Queens of the Stone Age performed at Agua Caliente Rancho Mirage on April 25, featuring a surprise reunion with former bassist Nick Oliveri — a moment fans won't soon forget. The city also hosted its second annual Earth Day celebration on April 22 at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory, featuring a tree planting and sustainability activities. Read more at KESQ.

Eisenhower Health was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Modern Healthcare and Premier — a proud recognition for our regional healthcare system.

Cathedral City

Cathedral City opened applications for its Community Arts Grant Program on April 21, and the city's annual recruitment period for Boards & Commissions is open through May 6 — a great opportunity for residents to get involved in local governance.

La Quinta

La Quinta encouraged residents to vote for local businesses in Palm Springs Life's "Best of the Best" contest before the April 30 deadline. The city also announced a community meeting for April 30 to discuss a proposed dog park at Monticello Park.

Regional Notes

    • A windblown dust advisory was in effect for parts of Riverside County, including Palm Desert, from April 24–26, prompting health warnings.

    • The renovated Yucca Valley Senior Center was renamed the Desert Willow Center for Seniors and reopened this month.

    • Riverside County veterans were invited to a town hall and breakfast on April 25 to learn about available services.
